Fantasma Headcanon
original tumblr post here.
All of the Arcobaleno’s animal partners are shown to have extraordinary abilities in their own rights. A lot of them we aren’t really shown: Fon’s Lichi, Verde’s Keiman, Colonello’s Falco, and Luce’s Cosmo. That leaves three for us to know, vaguely, the abilities of: Skull and Oodako, of course Reborn and Leon, and… Mammon and Fantasma.
Fantasma, I think, is a particularly special case.
Why? Well, it’s never explicitly stated, but I feel like there’s a good chance that Mammon experimented on Fantasma.
After all, they stated upfront during the Mist Battle: they have been using all their years since the Arcobaleno curse to try to figure out a way to break it. It should be noted that, in these appearances during the Varia Arc, Mammon shows themself to be pretty goddamn brilliant. They’re not like Verde, both in that they’re no “next Da Vinci” and both in how they approach Flames in comparison to him. Verde is interested in the utilization of Flames but not so much, it seems, in the Flames themselves. It’s a difference between realizing if you make a mill that you can create power vs exploring the ocean depths and researching how different things are the deeper you go.
Mammon figures out how to hide and block flames. Mammon does research on the Vongola rings’ power. And Mammon’s animal partner is the only other one besides Leon to change actual form- a fact that seems to not be something Reborn and Colonello knew about. Why do experiments on Fantasma? The animal partners only seemed to happen after the curse took place- Lal Mirch was the original chosen for Rain, but Colonello took her place and she never seems to show signs of having a partner herself like he does Falco. The animal partners seem to be an extension of their power as Arcobaleno. Thus, it’s only logical that Mammon would be curious and investigative of Fantasma.
That’s why I think Fantasma’s ability to change forms is a product of Mammon’s research. Both forms serve their own function.
As a frog, Fantasma’s ability is passive. Take note of her dark skin color and how frogs are generally more compact and fat. Black and dark colors like it absorbs more light (and heat) than light colors. Also, violet light carries more energy in it than warmer colors such as red. With those facts in mind, it’s possible that as a fat dark frog, Fantasma is in an optimal form for lowkey absorbing Mammon’s own Mist Flames into her body over time just by staying still and happy on Mammon’s head. She then proceeds to act as a Mist storage container. In this form, she’s also extremely sensitive to sources of Mist besides that of Mammon- acting up at Chrome’s peculiar circumstances. This potentially has something to do with Mist’s tendency towards illusions, but it’s connection to figuring out the locations of people even with a vague description. (Mammon’s snot technique, Lal Mirch’s homing bullets.)
As a salamander, Fantasma’s ability is active. Breaking free of her frog shell allows her to release all the Mist Flames that she’s gathered back into Mammon to give them access to more power than they’re restricted to in their cursed form. (Never enough to allow them to be at full strength pre-curse, alas. Fantasma is a garden hose where Mammon would need a firetruck.) However, as Lal Mirch showed in the Future Arc, recklessly letting loose Flames is setting them to waste. Thus: the Ouroboros form Fantasma takes and the yellow color of her skin. Besides the alchemical connotations, the Ouroboros’ circular shape keeps the Mist flames connected in some way and also pulls them back in sort of like a whirlpool. As for Fantasma’s yellow coloration despite being a partner of Mist? The color an object appears is the complementary color to the color the object absorbs. Since Fantasma is absorbing the purple of Mist flames so that they don’t needlessly escape and become useless to Mammon, she reflects all other colors of light… and is thus yellow as a result. Her primary purpose this way is to both give Mammon energy that’s been stored away and to pull back energy that’s being used so that it can be recycled to some degree.
Unlike Leon’s casual and rapid shapeshifting, however, Fantasma can’t change recklessly. When she’s switched into her active form, she needs to rest and gradually build her froggy shell back over herself again which is a process that requires her to not move much if at all. This can happen gradually on its own. However, with the appropriate techniques , this process can be sped up.
(This process, along with how I headcanon Fantasma capable of using a more advanced technique along the lines of snotdetection, involves the use of plants. However, plants and Dying Will Flames is a ramble for another time.)
(Remember this is all headcanon and me bullshitting to infinity and beyond.)
Appreciate Judgmental Frog.
